What better way to spend a dry sunny Saturday than on Swansea’s long stretch of beach, just out of the shadow of Swansea’s Meridian Quay tower, watching beach rugby? With plenty to do for the children, pork rolls and other hot food on offer and even a bar bus to quench the thirst of any hardened rugby player.
Well, thanks to Beach Rugby Wales on Saturday 23rd July, that is just what we got…
Back in May, Slate House was approached by the festival organiser Ashleigh Walters. He asked if we would like to sponsor the event by supplying the winners and runners up trophies for all categories (there was the sweetener of a free bar all day, which I promise we did not take advantage of!) Of course we were very happy to get involved in this local, growing event and so we designed and supplied the hand made Welsh slate trophies.
After getting there slightly late as my 2 year old boy doesn’t like being rushed (Yes; I had a child in tow, hence the reason the bar bus wasn’t taken advantage of!), we were pleasantly surprised with the turnout for the event, with a great atmosphere all round.
There was a real tournament atmosphere to the crowd with all the teams watching their competitors form closely from the Colosseum style seating overlooking the playing areas marked out on the sand. It was such an exciting event that even sports personality Non Evans MBE turned out to see what all the fuss was about!
At the end of a great day out, with lots of hard-earned bruises and even a broken nose, the results were:
FSG Men’s Cup winners: Y BaaBariad. Runners-up: Warriors Legends.
FSG Ladies winners: Team 200. Runners-up: Moody Cows.
Aspire2be Fairplay Trophy winners: Swansea Gladiators. Runners-up: Llanelli Warriors.
FSG Men’s plate winners: Porth Pups. Runners-up: Cambrian Welfare A.
FSG Ladies Plate winners: Riley Sport Flamingos. Runners-up: Treorchy.
The Wave & Swansea Sound corporate cup winners: Aspire 2Be. Runners-up: Apollo Teaching Services.
The Wave & Swansea Sound Corporate plate winners: Village Inn, Killay. Runners-up: Admiral Insurance.
So, big congratulations to Ashleigh Walters and the team at Beach Rugby Wales for organising this great event that will hopefully keep growing in popularity. I for one will definitely be marking this in my diary for next year… think I’ll get a baby sitter next year though!!!
