UV Printing onto Welsh Slate

New Process

Since 2007, Slate House has been manufacturing and personalising Welsh slate products, using various personalisation techniques to create customised gifts and keepsakes and creating our unique ranges of cheese boards, coasters, clocks and much more.

In the beginning, Slate House started off with a single laser engraving machine, before moving on to deep sandblast engraving, then later on to full colour sublimation printing, which after several year was discontinued due to quality issues with the process and heavy limitations with what we could print on. Not being able to directly print onto our Welsh slate product ranges was always something we had issues with.

The dream, was to own our own UV printer!

With sublimation printing, you need to firstly print your chosen design onto sublimation paper, then heat press the print onto your selected product, the product needs to be very flat and coated with a special polymer. Most 'photos on slate' products are done by this method, although the chipped edge of the slate will always be white as the press cannot print into crevices, And you could only use special polymer coated slate from China!

With UV printing, you can print directly onto any solid surface, even uneven surface! And prints amazingly well directly onto Welsh slate.

Due to the improved process capabilities and the far superior quality of UV printing, it was only the £32,000 price tag that held us back from purchasing a UV printer. With a little help from our local council, we have now made the jump towards the now state of the art personalisation machine, the Roland MD-240.

The result of UV photo printing directly onto Welsh slate is incredibly vibrant, with near perfect colour definition. The print is also highly durable and scratch resistant.
